Rihanna loved her Gran Gran Dolly very much. Maybe too much. The Barbadian singer had a huge tattoo of Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess of rebirth and fertility, inked across her chest just below her breast in her memory. Would gran approve?
The singer was in London to appear with UK band Coldplay at a performance following the London Para-Olympics. She hit up a tattoo parlor while she was there.
Rihanna’s grandmother, Clara “Dolly” Braithwaite, died of brain cancer in July and was an important influence on Rihanna’s young life. “Goodbye #grangranDOLLY get your beauty rest until I see you,” the singer tweeted at the time.
Rihanna’s New Tattoo; Cool or Disfiguring?
The tattoo is unusually large and spans her entire chest. “Goddess Isis- Complete Woman – Model for future generations- #GRANGRANDOLLY – always in and on my heart #1love,” the singer tweeted when she unveiled the new design Sunday night.
Isis is wearing her throne-shaped headdress and bent down on one knee. Her regal wings are spread out like a Harley Davidson logo. Ancient Egyptians deified women as well as men, and Isis has long been a symbol of female empowerment.
Rihanna is quickly becoming and illustrated woman. She has 18 tattoos. Although most are small, such as a cross on her collarbone and a musical note on her ankle and the sign of Pisces behind her right ear, she has a large pistol on her thigh. This is her largest tattoo yet.
