Hot Poppin' Culture News From New York City

Emma Watson’s Blackboard Jungle Schoolgirl Style (photos!)

Emma Watson shows off her young tough schoolgirl style in a new Nylon magazine photo shoot with “Perks of Being a Wallflower” stars Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller. One thing is certain, they don’t dress like this at Brown University.

Watson, who has been working toward a degree at the Ivy League school, took time off to film the coming of age movie based on a best seller by the same name by Stephen Chbosky.

She says she and other cast members felt the pressure of taking a cult classic to the big-screen. “Whatever people might think about it, whatever criticisms they have, all three of us were so vulnerable,” she told the magazine.

“All three of us really gave it everything we could and everything we had, and all three of us went into the movie terrified and very much aware of what this book means to people,” she added.

Although the shoot ostensibly plays off her new movie, the photos have a gritty urban look that recalls other classic schoolyard movies like 1955’s “Blackboard Jungle,” about a tough inner-city school, “Rebel Without a Cause” the same year and 1967’s “To Sir With Love,” the Sidney Poitier classic.

“Perks” is about a group of high-school misfits who take a freshman Charlie (Lerman) under their wing and try to help him figure out where he fits in. Emma plays Sam, a free-spirited senior who is the step-sister of Patrick (Miller). She ends up falling for Charlie.

The film also had meaning for Watson because her background is so atypical of women her age who had a typical adolescence. “I’ve done my life backwards; it’s really bizarre,” she explains.

“Most of my friends are just about to start working, and I’ve had a job for the past 10 years. It’s strange, because most people spend that decade figuring themselves out and figuring out what they like and what they don’t like–just making mistakes in the privacy of their own teenage bedrooms.

“And I am kind of doing everything in a different way, so sometimes it’s a bit isolating.”
