Madonna definitely has Lady Gaga on her mind, even if she may or may not still be irked at the singer for basing her song “Born This Way,” on Madonna’s hit “Express Yourself.”
Madonna was caught on video rehearsing in Israel for her MDNA tour and appeared to take a shot at Gaga over the similarities.
The Material Girl was singing “Express Yourself,” and jumped into “Born This Way” without missing a beat. She switched back to her own song, before singing “She’s Not Me” from her 2008 album Hard Candy.
In the video, Madonna appears to be doing a majorette routine with a baton. When the song breaks for a drum line solo, she comes back singing Gaga’s song at around a 1:15 into the 2:16 minute clip.
She sings a couple of verses of Gaga’s song and then segues back to her own, as if to dramatize the similarities. The video ends with Madonna singing “She’s not me,” over and over again.
It looks from the rehearsal that she will include the number in her tour. If so, she’ll be definitely making a statement that she’s still the queen of pop and not pretenders like Gaga and Katy Perry.
Madonna was damning with faint praise when Gaga released “Born This Way” last year. “I thought, ‘What a wonderful way to redo my song.’ I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was… interesting,” the 53-year-old singer said.
“It feels reductive,” she later said of the song during a 20/20 interview on ABC.
Gaga called Madonna’s statements “retarded.”
Madonna launches her MDNA Tour in Tel Aviv on Thursday (May 31), hoping it will kick-start sales of the album, which have been poor.
