The character is complex and the subject matter is dark and forbidding. It’s the kind of part a young actress covets because of the experience it gives them.
“Twilight” hottie Stewart, 22, has far more acting experience, although Lawrence, also has earned a spot in the blockbuster club for her role in “The Hunger Games.”
“It’s an independent movie, and they see it as a career-making role, like Meryl Streep in ‘Sophie’s Choice,’” a source told The New York Post.
“It is very unusual for two actresses to be so vocal in lobbying for a role, and even more unusual that they are the two hottest young actresses of the moment.”
But they are far from the only choice. Hollywood is rife right now with young actresses who are great at their craft. Among other possible candidates for the role are Emma Stone, 23, who was stellar in “The Help,” and has a major role in the new “Spider-Man” movie.
Elizabeth Olsen, also 23, was equally stellar in “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Carey Mulligan, 27, could easily play the role as well as slightly older Michelle Williams,,31, who was nominated for an Oscar for “My Week With Marilyn.”
A darkhorse actress who definitely has the acting chops is Aussie Emily Browning, who recently starred in “Sucker Punch,” and erotic thriller “Sleeping Beauty.”
Another possibility would be Dakota Fanning, 18, whose acting credentials are definitely solid.
The film itself is based on a novel by William Styron. It’s about a young woman living in a dysfunctional family in the uptight 1950s. The film delves into incest and other social taboos.
Daniel Day-Lewis and Colin Firth are said to be up for consideration as the father.
“I want to play Peyton more than anything I can possibly taste or touch in my life. I want to play her so bad. They’re the most [bleeped]-up family,” Stewart told Elle magazine.
Likewise, Lawrence said she was “obsessed” with the part.
“I have this feeling of protectiveness over characters I want to play . . . If someone else gets the part, I’m afraid they won’t do it right,” she said.
