David Letterman did the equivalent of throwing gasoline on a fire last night (July 12) when he told Anne Hathaway on his show that he’d seen the “Batman movie” and Batman dies. His comments touched off a firestorm.
Batman’s fate has been one of the biggest questions surrounding the “Dark Knight Rises,” the last of three Batman films directed by Christopher Nolan.
Nolan says the movie will be the last in every sense of the word, suggesting that the Caped Crusader may die. After all, the movie starts out with Bruce Wayne on the ropes as it is. In the comic book series, his antagonist Bane breaks Batman’s back.
So it came as a bit of a shock when Letterman matter-of-factly said, “I saw this movie, this Batman movie and in the end, Batman is dead.”
With that, Anne raised and eyebrow and said, “Dave!”
And both started laughing out loud. “Oh, he’s not dead,” Letterman added. “Just relax, will ya.”
Or is he?
Anne dutifully informed Dave that the movie’s ending is hotly debated and feelings are running high that Nolan will, indeed, kill off Batman, something fans do not want to see.
Footnote: Our best guess is Batman will not die. DC Comics wouldn’t allow it, and even Warner Bros. isn’t dumb enough to kill off one of hte biggest money makers in history. Is it? Check out the clip below and let us know what you think.
