James Holmes, the suspected shooter in the Century 16 theater shooting, has a Dark Knight connection; he saw himself as The Joker, the villain played by Heath Ledger in the film “The Dark Knight.”
The 24-year old suspected gunman is a former University of Colorado, Denver, student who moved from San Diego to Denver to studying for a PhD in neuroscience, according to reports.
New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly was the first to reveal the Batman angle. The alleged shooter at the midnight screening in Aurora, Colorado called himself the Joker, he said.
“We have some information, most of it is public. It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He had his hair painted red, he said he was ‘The Joker,’ obviously the enemy of Batman,” Kelly said.
FBI officials also said that Holmes saw himself as the Joker and was wearing a costume like the character when he was apprehended outside the theater immediately after the shooting, according to ABC. Many in the theater were dressed like the movie characters when the shooting took place.
Ledger’s memorable performance as the Joker in the 2008 Batman film, the sequel to “Batman Begins” was also his last. He died of a drug overdose at 28 in January 2008. He was awarded an Oscar posthumously for his performance.
