Zack Snyder’s new trailer for “Man of Steel,” looks like a meditative thumbsucker about Superman, with dark, moody shots of young Clark Kent adrift in the world, not knowing quite what to make of his superpowers or his place in life.
Henry Cavill, who was a dark horse for the role of Superman, and brings his dark, brooding good looks to the part.
Russell Crowe has the cameo as Superman’s Krypton father Jor-El, a part played by a fey Marlon Brando in the 1978 “Superman” film, with Christopher Reeve as the man of steel. Ayelet Zurer plays Lara Lor-Van.
After Jor-El sends his son to earth from his dying planet, Superman is raised in Kansas by Ma and Pa Kent played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane. Despite a wholesome upbringing, you can’t keep Clark down on the farm, especially when the earth is threatened by an alien force, another escapee from Krypton.
The trailers don’t provide a glimpse of Michael Shannon as evil General Zod, the Kryptonian warrior with similar superpowers. It focuses instead on an alienated Clark, setting off to find himself by hitchhiking (Who does that anymore?). The scene is right out of “Water for Elephants.”
There’s a quickie shot of superman breaking the sound barrier, which suggests special effects in the $175 million film will be top notch.
The overall feel, however, is darkened by the great burden Clark faces over what to do with his superpowers and his sense of being a stranger in a strange world. Amy Adams will play love interest Lois Lane, while Laurence Fishburne will play Perry White.
