“Top Gun” director Tony Scott, who took his own life Sunday, may have leaped off a Los Angeles area bridge because he discovered he had inoperable brain cancer, according to unconfirmed reports.

An anonymous source told ABC News the veteran director, 68, was suffering from the affliction.

No other details were immediately available about the alleged illness, but The New York Post reported that had previously had cancer that was thought to be in remission. “For awhile he was cancer free. He didn’t have any money problems or marriage problems,” the source said.

Police said an autopsy will be performed.

The suicide, which occurred on San Pedro’s Vincent Thomas Bridge Sunday afternoon (Aug 20), appeared to be meticulously planned. Scott left a notes or notes in his black Toyota Prius.

The car was found parked on the bridge and Scott was spotted climbing over the bridge’s safety fence. The notes reportedly listed contacts to be informed of his death, according to gossip site TMZ.

A more detailed suicide note was reported to have been found in his office. Police have not released the contents of any notes.

Among the many unanswered questions is why Scott chose such a public and dramatic way to end his life. The suicide was witnessed by motorists on the bridge and a number of boaters on the water below the bridge.

The roadway is estimated to be about 200 feet above the water, more than enough distance to reach terminal velocity for a falling human, estimated to be between 117mph and 125mph. The bridge is not known for suicides.

But Olympic diver Larry Andreasen was killed in 1990, after he jump from the bridge’s west tower, which tops out at 365-feet, trying to set a diving record. He won the bronze medal in diving at the 1964 Olympics.

Scott and his brother, Director Ridley Scott are both considered very private people, and Tony Scott left a young wife and two young children.
