Katharine McPhee pulls double duty in stunning fashion spreads for Allure’s and Nylon’s all important September fashion issues. She’s also moved to the upper echelon of “American Idol” veterans, with her hit show “Smash.”
The series from DreamWorks Television premiered in February on NBC and was an unqualified hit for the network. A second season is already in the works.
“There had been so many parts that I didn’t get or came so close to getting. After a pilot I was in didn’t get picked up, I remember crying that nothing’s really clicking, nothing’s ever going to happen,” she tells Allure.
McPhee will reprise her role as Karen Cartwright, a naive but talented performer who finds herself caught up in the maelstrom of a Broadway musical, competing for the lead role in a show about Marilyn Monroe. She got the part in Season One.
“In some of the later episodes, we get to see Karen stick up for herself and have some strong interactions with people instead of being meek. I really relate to that, because I see myself as someone who’s finally grown into being more sure of her thoughts and opinions,” she says.
The show has a strong cast, including Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Christian Borle, Megan Hilty and Anjelica Houston.
McPhee is also making inroads in fashion with her model looks, dazzling brunette hair and statuesque build; she’s five-feet, eight-inches tall. In 2008, she signed a two-year deal to promote Neutrogena’s anti-acne products.
In her Nylon shoot, McPhee goes bohemian. Photographer Justin Hollar and stylist Zanna Roberts Rassi catch her in an eclectic mix of romantic clothes from Alberta Ferretti, Nicole Miller, A.F. Vandevorst, Emilio Pucci and Altuzarra.
