Charlize Theron threatens to steal “Snow White and the Huntsman, with her stunning portrayal of the evil queen. Universal Pictures provides a new look at how they brought the terrifying queen to life in a behind-the-scenes video.
Kristen Stewart, who plays Snow White, has received most of the publicity during filming. But Theron’s portrayal of the evil queen, who thrives on the misery of her subjects, is eerie and alluring at the same time.
Her sense of evil is enhanced by the dark environs where she terrorizes her subjects. The trailer reveals that Queen Ravenna’s throne is actually based on the “death throne” of Britain’s Queen Victoria, according to Dean Brooks, the film’s supervising model maker.
Set Director Fainche McCarthy said the throne took about three months to build. It first saw action on day eleven of shooting on the film.
“The main name of the game was to make it look big and impressive,” Brooks says. We’ve a very big set here so it’s got to look very imposing.”
The throne is a bas-relief of death and evil, and Ravenna derives her power from it.
The vain and selfish queen flies into a rage when her magic mirror tells her that stepdaughter, Snow White, is destined to surpass her not only as the “Fairest One of All” but also as the kingdom’s future ruler.
She dispatches the Huntsman to find her in the foreboding forest and cut her heart out. But the Huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth, takes pity on Snow White and helps her lead a rebellion against the queen.
The movie is a re-telling of the Brothers Grimm tale in as a realistic medieval tale. For a taste of the realism, check out the trailer.
