Justin Bieber apparently realizes if you can’t beat them, join them… the latest boy bands, that is. The teen sensation is collaborating with One Direction, the hot UK boy toys managed by music mogul Simon Cowell.
The Irish and British lads, culled from Simon Cowell’s UK show “X-Factor,” sang their hit “What Makes you Beautiful” on the Kids Choice Awards show April 1 and too the place by storm.
Katy Perry, Ashley Tisdale and Victoria Justice were also groovin’ on the kids. Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez also danced and knew the words to their song.
The group, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, is making its first foray to the United States and the excitement almost matches the arrival of The Beatles in 1964.
Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun and label head L.A. Reid probably got an offer from Cowell they couldn’t refuse. Even though Braun represents competing boy band The Wanted, also newly arrived in the United States, they chose to do a deal with the master of “X-Factor” and “American Idol.”
Irish One Direction singer, Niall Horan, let the cat out of the bag today (Apr. 5) when he tweeted that the boys were already in the studio working up material with Justin.
“In the studio with our boy @justinbieber last night,” Horan wrote. “It’s gonna sound great!”
Justin, who is now 18, is outgrowing his teenybopper image and hopes to graduate to a more adult sound to stay in tune with his more mature audience, which is growing up with him.
But the new boy bands are so hot, they also threaten to eclipse him. So why not join the band, so to speak. Cowell is sowing up deals for his group right and left. He already has them signed to do a show on Nickelodeon.
Braun tweeted that it was “very possible” a collaboration will take place. “He likes them and thinks they are good dudes. all people of that generation should be there to help EACHOTHER,” he said. And help those who are pulling the strings behind the scene.
One Direction released their debut single last September and hit No. 1 on the UK charts. Their debut album, Up All Night, was release a month later and was the fastest selling debut album on the UK Albums Chart. Up All Night debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Charts.
The band already has two million Twitter followers, although that number is dwarfed by Justin’s 19 million followers.
Meanwhile, The Wanted’s song “Glad You Came” was recently featured on Fox’s hit show, “Glee,” and now the group is set to perform live on “American Idol’s” Thursday night results show tonight (Apr. 5)
