Hugh Hefner won’t go quietly into that good night. Not when Republicans are trashing everything he’s fought for during his career. Well, the only thing, really… sexual freedom.
The Hedonist in Chief, who’s pioneering magazine opened the door to sexual freedom, and yes, women’s liberation, issued a stirring sexual manifesto in the pages of his aging, if iconic magazine. He lambastes the GOP’s “war against sex.”
Hefner, 85, has issues with all three leading Republicans. He slams Rick Santorum’s view on birth control and says Ron Paul is just as bad. Mitt Romney has vowed to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal. Enough said.
The architect of the upscale men’s magazine lays out his views in a full-page editorial in the upcoming May issue. Hef says repressed conservatives are “pounding on bedroom doors,” according to Politico, which got an advance copy of the screed.
“For months I have watched the rhetoric building,” Hefner opines. “Last October, in an interview with an evangelical blogger, Rick Santorum promised to defund birth control on the grounds that contraception is ‘a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.’
… Ron Paul was no better, believing that the birth control pill did not cause immorality but that immorality creates the problem of wanting to use the pill. Mitt Romney vowed to see a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and to overturn Roe v. Wade.”
Hefner has always been a strong defender of personal freedom and freedom of speech, although his lifestyle has often been criticized by feminists for objectifying women.
But Hef is at his best pontificating on social issues.
“If these zealots have their way, our hard-won sexual liberation — women’s rights, reproductive rights and rights to privacy — lie in peril. We won’t let that happen,” he says.
In fact, attitudes about sex have changed so much over the years, his magazine lost its relevance. But not now. “Welcome to the new sexual revolution,” he writes.
