Rihanna takes on an oriental flare in the new Coldplay video for “Princess Of China,” the tenth track off last year’s album Mylo Xyloto. She’s the center of attention in racy outfits, including an Angelina Jolie look-alike Oscar dress.
The song, written by band members Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin, with Brian Eno contributing, hit mainstream radio last month.
The video was reportedly filmed to be used as a backdrop during Coldplay concerts. The 24-year-old singer is featured throughout. Martin told MTV the song was written specifically with the Barbadian singer in mind.
“In like a dream scenario, we had a song that I’d secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it … and then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said okay,” he said.
The song is also a departure from the band’s usual alternative rock fare. It has elements of electronic rock, electropop and R&B.
The video opens with Rihanna wearing a strapless black gown with a slit up to the top of her thigh. It looks almost identical to the dress Jolie wore to the Oscars. She caused a sensation by repeatedly baring her leg.
Rihanna appears against a sunburst and takes on the look of Hindu goddess Kali, with multiple arms. The scene then cuts to the singer wearing a kimono with a flowing red scarf.
