Hollywood actors and actresses really don’t think they are like you and me.
Surrounded by Tinseltown sycophants and media hacks who shower them with unending adoration, they actually do start to think they have a special entitlement, like some kind of royalty.
Not surprisingly, the Hollywood power couple encountered a rude cultural shock when they found out that “Do you know who I am?” doesn’t mean squat outside the insular world they live in. The weird thing is many Hollywood stars try hard to convey just the opposite image, and Witherspoon was one of them.
Reese Witherspoon’s Official Statement
“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say I clearly had one drink too many, and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that was no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police, and I am very sorry for my behavior.
She had a very polished public image. She was considered affable and down-to-earth, the kind of big Hollywood star who really shunned Hollywood pretentiousness. It worked well for her, not to mention her career. She was relatable.
But when push came to shove, she decided to pull rank.
So here’s the scenario. She and her big-shot Hollywood agent husband Jim Toth were in Atlanta Apr. 19, having a night on the town. Both had been drinking heavily, but Toth apparently thought nothing about getting behind the wheel of the car.
Police spotted him weaving across the center line and driving on the wrong side of the road. Hey, no problem, happens all the time in Hollywood.
But Atlanta police pulled him over. They claim he smelled like alcohol and he blew a .139 on a Breathalyzer test, according to Hollywood trade Variety.
That’s when Reese went all Hollywood on the police. She reportedly got out of the car and shouted, “Do you know my name?” and “You’re about to find out who I am.”
After ignoring repeated warnings to get back in her car, she was handcuffed and taken into custody for disorderly conduct. “Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer,” the police officer wrote in his report.
“I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet,” he added. She must have loved that. Credit goes to the Atlanta police for bringing these two back to earth.
Both were jailed briefly and released on bond. Witherspoon is in Atlanta filming a new movie, “The Good Lie.”
They’re due in court Apr. 22. To keep up with all the latest Hollywood shenanigans, follow TheImproper on Twitter.
