Lana Del Rey Fights Her Demons… Along With Music Critics (photos)

Lana Del Rey’s fashion and music success overseas has not been matched in the United States.

Lana Del Rey’s conquest of the fashion world continues with a stunning spread in Canada’s Fashion magazine, where she laments that her struggle with her teenage drinking problems continues to this day.

The singer, real name Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, has taken Europe by storm with her retro-style and moody, blues-inflected singing style.

But the 27-year-old has largely been ignored by fashion magazines in her home country of the United States and dismissed by music critics, despite solid-selling albums.

Although she comes from a privileged background. She was raised in tony Lake Placid, New York. Her parents are New York marketing executives. Still she started drinking as a teen and was sent to a posh Connecticut boarding school at 14 to deal with her alcohol addiction.

She says she’s been sober for more than eight years, but still struggles to keep from drinking. But the battering she took from music critics, she says, nearly pushed her to the edge.

“I feel like my work’s important, but I don’t always feel like I get respect for it. When I feel like people don’t like [my] music and that the 10 years I spent making what I made was not for a good reason, that makes me want to drink again,” she told the magazine.

All that may change, however, thanks to the song she wrote “Young and Beautiful,” for “The Great Gatsby,” starring Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s already creating Oscar buzz.

“Feeling like you’re respected among the people who do the same thing you do is incredible and necessary,” she adds.

Her experience with the fashion industry has been just the opposite. “People in fashion rescued me. Because they are so much more removed from the music arena, they felt it was OK to support me when I needed it most. They never had any baggage about who I was,” she says.

For her fashion spread, she weas a Catherine Malandrino top and Pink Tartan skirt for the cover. She wears retro styles by Sally Lapointe, Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana in the beach-themed shoot by photographers Mark Williams and Sara Hirakawa.
