Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey One Season Wonders on American Idol 1

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj never developed the chemistry American Idol producers were hoping for. Both are leaving the show.

Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey may be more than one-hit wonders musically, but both turned out to be one-season wonders on “American Idol.” The two stars, who were brought in to spice things up, confirmed their departures on Twitter.

Chalk it up to a costly failed experiment, one the show could ill afford.

Minaj and Carey never really gelled on the show and chemistry never really materialized with Randy Jackson and Keith Urban . Their arrival also put too much emphasis on the judges and took away from the whole point of the show, to find a pop idol.

What Fox Said About Mariah: “Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the ‘American Idol’ contestants this season. We know she will remain an inspiration to ‘Idol’ hopefuls for many seasons to come.”

What Fox Said About Nicki: “Nicki Minaj is a superstar who brought a level of honesty and passion to ‘American Idol’ and who had a tremendous positive impact on so many contestants this season. Given her extremely busy career, we understand and respect her decision and wish her the best.”

The shows’s producers did no one a favor early on when they tried to contrive a feud between Minaj and Carey in pre-season promotions. But when the full episode aired, the confrontation was clearly way over hyped, if not totally faked. Judge Randy Jackson was the target of Minaj’s animus, rather than Carey.

That hurt the show’s credibility, even more, which was unfortunate. As the season progressed, both artists started making solid contributions. Surprisingly, Minaj emerged as the more likable and more knowledgeable judge.

Maybe if she had another season under her belt and could spend less time calling attention to herself, Nicki could have been a credible job. But it was not to be.

“Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn’t trade it for the world!” she tweeted late yesterday (May 30).

Carey is heading out on tour and used that as a convenient excuse to kiss off Idol.

Fox did its best to give both stars honorable sendoffs with flowery statements. (see above)

Veteran judge Randy Jackson is also departing and Urban will likely exit as well, giving the show a clean slate to rebuild. The show needs to get back to the basics, and focus on finding top talent.
