Miley Cyrus apparently can’t help setting a bad example, even when she isn’t trying. She’s been photographed smoking pot, pounding beer, smoking cigarettes and stripping down to virtually nothing. But this bad habit puts her life at risk.

Miley, 20, was videoed clambering into the back of a black SUV in footage shot by MTV for an interview.

The SUV was barreling down a California freeway at god knows what speed as Miley blabbed away. Miley wasn’t driving; she was sitting in the back. Even so, she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

Seatbelt use is mandatory for all car passengers under California law. Fines range from $20 to $50 for multiple offenses.

It’s one of the most dangerous positions you can put yourself in. Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in France in 1997. She was riding in the back seat of her Mercedes sedan without a seatbelt when it slammed into a bridge abutment.

She was thrown violently into the seat in front of her and suffered fatal internal injuries. Her bodyguard, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived even though he was riding in the front seat. He also was the only one who survived.

Seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50 percent, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.

Young adults age 18-34 are the least likely to wear seat belts, and they also have the highest crash-related injury rates, according to the CDC.

Miley would do everyone a favor if she would be a little less self-centered and just a little more socially conscious, because fans take all kinds of social cues from celebrities.

Riding in a car without a seatbelt is dangerous, even in the back seat. You never know when an accident may happen, that’s why seatbelts only work when you wear them all the time.
