Lady Gaga was framed in white as she opened the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night (Aug. 25), singing her new single “Applause.” He faced was all that was visible thanks to a tight shot. As the camera panned back, she revealed herself.

She was wearing what could have passed as a nun’s habit. Her robes were stark white and flowing, although it’s probably safe to say it was an interpretation of a holy garment.

Gaga quickly lost it as the song picked up tempo. Her backup dancers pulled off the habit to reveal gaga in tight black jumpsuit and a sequined tank top and sequine front panel.

She changed on stage into a royal blue wrap skirt and eccentric waist jacket with large shoulder extensions and a platinum blonde helmet of hair. Then, off came the skirt and jacket and on went another wig, with red, yellow and black face paint.

Then, she took off everything as her dancers closed around her. After a moment she jumped out of the black-clad dancers wearing a sea-shell bikini with a think head of tousled hair.

The awards show was being held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
