Gaga, 27, performed live in Times Square and kicked off her act with a verse or two of “Over the Rainbow,” from the classic 1939 film.
She started out as Dorothy, complete with a picnic basket and stuffed dog toy. Then she did a quick costume change into Glinda the Good Witch of the North. After that, she stripped down to a black leotard and pulled off her wig.
She finally ended up dressed as Dorothy again with a huge bow in her tousled sandy-brown hair. Her backup dancers played the Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion. Another dancer was dressed as one of the Wicked Witch of the West’s flying monkeys.
The wicked witch also makes an appearance, while Gaga is holding an apple, perhaps throwing in a touch of Snow White to boot. Fans in the audience wore large red flowers on their heads to represent poppies. “I hope they all don’t fall asleep,” Gaga chimed during the interview portion of the show.
She said Dorothy is “an explanation in a way” for her entire career so far.
“It’s my way of saying all of these outfits and all of these wigs I’ve been changing in over the years; this is my way of simulating and this is my way of surviving, my way of getting to Oz to have all my dreams come true,” she said.
