Davuluri is the second consecutive Miss New York to win the crown. Usually contestants from southern states dominate the competition.
Predictably, Davuluri’s heritage sparked a series of racist responses on Twitter that have been getting the lion’s share of media attention. One of the drawbacks of social media is their ability to accentuate what really amounts to a minority opinion.
Even President Obama was dragged into the controversy. “Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must’ve made Obama happy,” Tweeted one idiot. For the record, Davuluri is not Muslim, according to the pageant.
The 24-year-old Syracuse, N.Y., resident competed on a platform celebrating cultural diversity. She performed a classical Indian dance fused with temporary dance moves.
Some of the the racist tweets could be traced to Fox News. “The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this, but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values,” Tweeted Todd Starnes, a Fox News host.
Davuluri’s father is a medical doctor, and she says she plans to go to medical school as well. If anyone represents America’s values it’s her.
