Neil Patrick Harris turned the tables on himself in his opening monologue for the 2013 Emmy Awards, with a knowing wink that awards show emcees are often as over-inflated as the actors and actresses sitting in the audience.

Harris gave former Emmy Awards hosts Jane Lynch, Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O’Brien their moment back in the spotlight.

Midway through his monologue, they came on stage to offer Harris their “advice” for negotiating all the pitfalls, namely boredom and lame jokes, that plague all emcees.

Kimmel told him to enjoy the moment because, as in is case, “they might not ask you back.” He hosted the show last year.

Actor Kevin Spacey put things in perspective with his aside from the audience, revealing his secret wish to host the show as well. “It’s all going according to my plan,” he said from his seat.

“Look at that parade of babbling baffoons. They couldn’t host a children’s birthday party.” Right, move over Bozo.

But Harris is well aware how easy it is to fall into that category, fortunately he’s got the job nailed. He’s hosted the Tony Awards in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and the 2010 and 2013 Emmys.
