McCartney, the ex-Beatle who has gone on to a singular solo career, is promoting his latest album of pop/rock songs at the tender age of 71.
He played three songs off his album, titled New in front of a mass of head-bobbing cell-phone holders. Only McCartney could command Times Square, one of the busiest intersections in the world.
In 2009, McCartney and his band appeared just as suddenly in Mid-town Manhattan on top of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater, home of “Late Night With David Letterman.” He played a rousing set that stopped traffic.
At 71, the rocker is busier than ever, juggling world tours, video documentaries, new music and re-mastered early works.

As big as The Beatles became back in the 1960s, the band is just a chapter in his long, storied career.
The musician married Hamptons heiress Nancy Shevell, 53, in Oct. 2011, further cementing his ties to New York City. The couple and 30 close friends gathered in London for the ceremony.
