West reportedly popped the question in front of her family on Kim’s 33rd Birthday Monday (Oct 22). And he did it in a big way.
He flew Kim to San Francisco, blindfolded her, and took her to AT&T Park, home to the San Francisco Giants, which he’d rented for the occasion.
When she got there, an orchestra started playing Lana Del Rey’s song “Young and Beautiful,” one of Kim’s favorites, according to gossip site TMZ.
He reportedly popped the question and produced a gargantuan 15-carat diamond ring. Nothing will be modest about this courtship, and that could work against Kim’s already battered reputation for over-the-top ostentation.
The couple has been officially dating for 18 months. Kanye picked up Kim on the rebound from her disastrous marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries.
She ended the marriage 72 days after a lavish $18 million wedding, memorable largely for the huge number of product endorsements. It was the epitome of crassness and spectacle, and Kim looked like she was only in it for the money.
She didn’t help her cause when evidence surfaced that she was manipulating her so-called “reality” show to make Humphries look bad to justify her decision to end their holy union.
West has done much since then to help restore her image. And with baby North West in the picture, marriage may be the final step toward regaining a measure of respectability.
This would be West’s first walk down the aisle, and given his penchant for bling, the wedding may be another exercise in conspicuous consumption. So is the public ready for more crass materialism?

Footnote: While Kanye made a big splash with the engagement party, he didn’t hang around. He jumped on a plane and flew to Los Angeles to attend the Hollywood Film Awards later Monday evening.
