Eminem, real name Marshall Bruce Mathers III and also known by alter-ego Slim Shady, has a reputation for complex rhyme schemes and syncopated beats.
But “Monster” may take the cake. In the last verse he raps:
In the draft, turn nothing into somethin,
still can make that straw into gold chump,
I will spin Rumpelstiltskin in a hay stack.
Maybe I need a straight jacket, face facts,
I am nuts for real, but I’m okay with that
Not to get too technical, but not even Yeezus himself can spit a rhyme like that. But truth be told he used the word once before.
Beyond that, Eminem is all about trying to understand himself and the contradictions that mark his life. “I wanted the fame, but not the cover of Newsweek
Oh well, guess beggars can’t be choosey” he laments.
Rihanna lends her vocals to sing a powerful hook:
I’m friends with the monster that’s under my bed
Get along with the voices inside of my head
You’re trying to save me, stop holding your breath
And you think I’m crazy, yeah, you think I’m crazy
Overall, another A+.
This is the second collaboration between the two. Rihanna was featured on the now classic “Love the Way You Lie.” Monster is off the Marshall Mathers LP 2 album.
