Can we give it a rest, now?
E! News Online appears to be the principal source of most of the unsubstantiated speculation about the couple.
You may recall, E! News reported “conclusively” in May that Beyonce was pregnant with her second child, a media fiasco that ended only after husband Jay-Z personally denied the report in an interview.
But even the unreliable Web site had to stop believing its own reporting when Penn was photographed Nov. 13 with Vampire Diaries star Steven R. McQueen.
He and Dylan met up with Sean and actor Jon Hamm for dinner after watching the premiere of Sean’s new film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles.
It was likely another case of friends meeting up with friends. Pattinson is a friend of McQueen’s. McQueen has been in a relationship with Hillary Harley, and the two still thought to be together.
The story was a little ironic, since the E! News had reported that Pattinson and Dylan were in a relationship but were avoiding calling each other “boyfriend and girlfriend.” Say What?
The UK tabloid The Daily Star, which is so unreliable it’s laughable, claimed in the most ridiculous story that Pattinson was planning to take Penn on a secret getaway to Hawaii next month. If it was a secret how would the tabloid know?
Then again, why should it care? When next month rolls around, no one will remember their sketchy headline-grabbing story, which was repeated by dozens of other tabloid sites, no questions asked.
In the end, these stories really come down to the age old question of whether a glass is half empty or half full.
People ran a sensational headline “Robert Pattinson’s Flirty Night Out with Dylan Penn,” after they were spotted at an event, celebrating Angie Banicki’s travel memoir, “30 Before 30: Traveling Under the Influence.”
The truth is the were spotted talking together “but by the end of the night he was in the corner with a friend and she was talking to Michael B Jordan,” an eye-witness said.
The tabloid explained away the fact that they acted like the were just friends by citing another unnamed source who seemed to have an inside track on their thought processes. “They were a little cautious, making sure people noticed they did not come together,” the person reportedly said. Say What?
Were they together or weren’t they? And, if so why go to all the trouble to hide it? More likely they weren’t together at all.
Other than that night, the two were conclusively seen together only one other time in September. They were spotted at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood after attending a show earlier by rapper Mickey Avalon at the Viper Room, according to confirmed reports.
Most of the other gossip web sites have recycled those two stories. This does not a romance make, no matter how many times it’s reported.
Perhaps more tellingly, Rob appeared alone at the “Go Go Gala” fundraising event earlier this week. Neither Dylan nor Kristen Stewart were in sight.
