Britney Spears kicked off her two-year residency at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, cheered on by a sold-out celebrity audience that included two of her biggest wannabes Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus.

Selena Gomez was also spotted hanging with Sia, Perry, and Johnny Wujek during the show.

Perry, 29, Cyrus, 21, and Gomez, 21, are cut from the same pop cloth as Spears, who, at 32, is the reigning pop princess.

It would not be out of character for each of them to covet a similar Vegas deal somewhere down the road. Spears is reportedly making $15 million for about 100 shows in her two-year residency at the 7,000-seat theater.

Vegas residencies were once considered anathema for pop music singers. Typically, over-the-hill acts were booked for extended stays.

But Celine Dion changed all that when she began a three-year residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in 2011.

She became the “most profitable music act in Las Vegas” since Elvis Presley, according to the casino.

Now residencies have become a coveted gig. They avoid the ardors of touring while performers also get a guaranteed paycheck.

Caesars, which owns Planet Hollywood, is also counting on Spears to draw a younger crowd to Sin City. If it works out, you can bet other young artists will be offered similar deals.

“This opens up a lot of opportunities. For someone like Pink or Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, the license to be creative without the stress of a tour would be really compelling,” Caesar’s Vice President of Entertainment, Kurt Melien, told The Los Angeles Times.

Spears performed 23 of her hit singles in just 90 minutes, while putting on an energetic stage show, leading some critics to charge that she was lip-syncing.
