Zombies, that is, actors posing as zombies lurk beneath a subway gate, waiting for passersby in New York’s Union Square to promote AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’

Cable Network AMC decided to prank New Yorkers by camping some “zombies” underneath a sidewalk subway grate. It so disgusting, who wouldn’t believe zombies live down there? Not a lot of New Yorkers, apparently.

A video of the prank shows supposedly jaded hipster types jumping for their lives as the “zombies,” actually actors, reached up to grab them.

The whole point was to promote the upcoming season of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” a horror drama about a small group of survivors living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse.

Surprisingly the Metropolitan Transit Authority cooperated with the network to set up the prank. Typically, the MTA is pretty humorless.

It modified the grate overnight, so the actors, complete with bloody sores and bleeding hands, could reach up and grab at unsuspecting passersby the following morning.

The scene played out in Manhattan’s Union Square, a trendy spot that includes a large park and lots of hip restaurants and bars.

The new season airs this Sunday, Feb. 9. Check out the video below. It’s pretty hilarious.
