The film follows Pierre Benezit, a “caregiver,” as he goes about his daily routine in the face of non-stop sexual harassment from women.
Of course, he doesn’t help himself by wearing a loose fitting shirt open at the neck, Bermuda shorts that expose his legs and flip flops. (For some reason the French find flip flops sexy).
The 10-minute film, with English subtitles, has gone viral mainly in Europe. It’s received more than 4.5 million views in two weeks.
“I wanted it to be not so realistic, but frightening,” Pourriat says of the film.
In this society, women are allowed to go bare chested, while men must cover up. A couple jog topless through scenes.
In another telling scene, Benzit takes his son to a day care provider who wears a stifling balaclava and a long robe because his wife insists on it.
Meanwhile, the women are brutes. The make sexist remarks and one laughingly pees in an alley.
The group of four women find Benezit impertinent when he scolds them and they sexually assault him at knife point.
The humiliation continues when he reports the assault to the police and is met by indifference from the female detective.
“She pinched my testicles; then she took my penis in her mouth and bit it,” he whimpers.
The detective looks at him askance and suggests he invited the assault.
Pierre gets no sympathy from his wife, either. She’s more interested in talking about her big score at work.
Pourriat has been inspired by the reception to begin work on her next film, a mockumentary about the social pressure on women to shave their pubic hair.
Cameron Diaz would be perfect for the part.
