The Clam Bar, Where Catch of the Day Rules in Amagansett

The Clam Bar

The specials reflect what’s coming off the boats that day, like fresh tuna, swordfish, or striped bass.

The Clam Bar in Amagansett is a classic  Hamptons seaside snack bar. The “catch of the day” is the order of the day. The restaurant strives to offer the freshest seafood on the South fork, served up with the ocean as a backdrop.

Owner Dick Ehrlich, (who also owns The Seafood Barge on Long Island’s North Fork), has relied on the same fleet of local fishermen for more than 20 years.

The specials reflect what’s coming off the boats that day, like fresh tuna, swordfish, or striped bass. Clams are a staple – served on the half shell, in chowder, fried or stuffed.

Popular favorites include Cajun popcorn shrimp, crab cakes, and The Clam Bar’s lobster roll is considered by many to be the best around.

The menu also includes  burgers, hot dogs and salads, for those who want something other than seafood.

The Clam Bar embodies the spirit of summer at the beach.

Customers gather under the umbrellas at outdoor tables to relax after a day spent on the beac or sightseeing.

Shorts and sunglasses are required dress. Summing up this popular eatery’s appeal, Richard J. Scholem of The New York Times wrote, “The true spirit of Long Island can be found in places like The Clam Bar.”

The Clam Bar opens for the season in May, and closes when the wind starts to whip off the Atlantic in October or November. Like bathing suits, suntan lotion, and sandals, The Clam Bar is strictly for fair weather fun.
