When Katie Holmes was tapped for the role of First Lady and style icon Jackie Kennedy she didn’t have to go very far for advice to capture one of the 20th Century’s most captivating women. She simply asked her husband, Tom Cruise.
Cruise, who’s known to spend countless hours developing his movie characters, spent equal hours with Holmes going over video footage of the Kennedy clan, according to the upcoming issue of Elle magazine.
“[Tom] watched everything with me,” she says. “He found it fascinating.”
The fact that she would be playing one of the most admired and tragic women in American history, created an extra burden, because Holmes was determined to get it right.
“I worked as hard as I could, because I loved her. On set there was this feeling that we had to create something very special, because these people were very special,” she says.
When it comes to fashion, Holmes has someone else in her family to turn to, daughter Suri, who has become a fashion icon and critic, of her own at the tender age of four.
“She’ll really tell me [what she thinks],” Katie says. “Like today I’m wearing brown suede pants, and she said, ‘I don’t like your pants.’
“But then she’ll say, ‘You’ve got to wear these shoes.’ Or ‘That’s so pretty, Mom. Wear that.’ She’s got a great eye,” she adds.
“The other day we came out of a store, and she said, ‘I want to go there,’ pointing at another store quite a distance away. In that store was the dress that she wanted.
I said, ‘Wow, Suri. You’re something. You picked that out from a football field away.'”
The History Channel announced the eight-hour series last April and picked Holmes to star with Greg Kinnear as President John F. Kennedy.
Tom Wilkinson will play father Joe Kennedy, Sr, and Barry Pepper will play brother and Attorney General Robert Kennedy.
“The Kennedy’s” will air on the History Channel in 2011.
