Kim Kardashian definitely needed a photo opportunity, but not like this. Her humanitarian trip to Haiti has caused an uproar, forcing her to respond with a personal statement on her Web site.
No sooner had she returned from the grueling mission to the earthquake ravaged country, than reports surfaced that she basically phoned in her visit from a luxury hotel suite in the nation’s capital.
Critics claimed she rode around the country in a chauffeured convoy heavy with security guards like she was Pappa Doc, the country’s former iron-fist dictator.
What’s more, Oprah Winfrey is reportedly incensed that Kim’s trip upstaged her own visit to Haiti.
TheImproper reported Dec. 13 that Oprah traveled to Haiti with actor Sean Penn to view the island’s recovery from the devastating 2010 earthquake.
It seemed like Oprah, flanked with her own security detail, was getting all the press, but The National Enquirer reports that the talk show queen “is livid” that Kim’s visit upstaged her.
“Kim has no idea what she’s done. It’s always better to have Oprah on your side than against you,” a source told the tabloid.
Officially, Kim traveled to Haiti to view the Haitian relief organization “We Advance,” co-founded by “Prime Suspect” television star Maria Bello.
But she stayed with momager Kris Jenner at the five-star Karibe Hotel in the capital of Port-au-Prince.
Her room, the posh Presidential Suite cost $1,000 a night, a pittance for Kim, but a fortune to average Haitians, The Enquirer reported.
Her room included private elevators, a Jacuzzi, dual plasma TVs and “a breathtaking view of Port-au-Prince.”
“This visit was not about helping Haiti’s poor people – it was about helping Kim Kardashian revamp her image,” said local television producer Steve Azor.
Kim was trailed by her own cameras, apparently collecting footage for one of her reality shows.
The reality show star was so incensed by the report she responded on her Web site.
“Some media outlets have tried to tarnish the motive behind my visit and have written completely ridiculous and untrue things,” she wrote, singling out The Enquirer.
“I have ignored all of this until now… but when a magazine makes the decision to twist the truth and write lies like that, it belittles the entire experience we had in Haiti, and I won’t let them do that,” she added.
Kim said she planned to share “some really great stories and photos” with he fans.
Oddly, Kim claimed she did not attend a fashion show as The Enquirer claimed, even though there is video of her… at a fashion show. Check it out below.
