Alicia Keys’ artistry in music is unparalleled, but can she extend her talent to jewelry? Like many artists these days, Keys wants to be more than a musician. She wants to be a brand. It was just a matter of finding the right medium to express herself.
Needless to say, it was love at first sight when she met Gisèle Thériault of The Barber’s Daughters at a sale of her jewelry.
“I fell in love with the individuality of the pieces, but more than that, the words that were written on them really resonated with the songwriter in me,” Alicia tells WWD.
The 12-time Grammy award-winning R&B singer plans to launch a necklace collection of her own in fall 2010.
While the rest of the world won’t get a chance to see her collection until next year, New Yorkers will have an opportunity to buy her creations next week.
They will be on display during a two-day preview at a temporary shop at Collette Blanchard Gallery, 26 Clinton St., in Manhattan.
How good is Alicia’s jewelry? Well, actress Halle Berry bought a one-of-a-kind piece for $40,000 at a charity auction.
Gisele’s pieces are inscribed with poetry and prayers.
“The foundation of my current work of engraving poetry, prose and prayer into the jewelry is inspired by the discoveries of Dr. Masuru Emoto (author of Hidden Messages in Water),” she explains on her web site.
“He displayed that the vibration of words has profound effect on water with his photographs. Microscopic pictures of water influenced by positive words created beautiful snowflakes and negative words created pictures that looked like diseased cells or mucky mud puddles,” she adds.
“Since our bodies are 70 percent water, positive words worn upon them reflect the same back. Creating a talisman, a grounding agent or vitamin for the soul.”
Alicia was profoundly moved.
“I knew at that moment, for the first time, that through a whole other medium I would be able to spread inspiration, and that’s what got me started,” she said.
Alicia’s collection of necklaces for The Barber’s Daughters will range in price from $85 to $2,500, The pieces will include precious metals and gems inscribed with inspirational messages.
