Madonna has never hesitated to blur the line between commercialism and her music, and she did just that with the lastest commercial for her new fragrance, “Truth or Dare by Madonna.”
The commercial is in the same style as her “Girl Gone Wild” video, down to the black-and-white filming and blurred dream-like imaging.
The Material Girl’s 12th studio album, MDNA, is expected to debut at No. 1 on the pop charts when it’s released on Monday (Apr. 2), according to Billboard. Her perfume launch has been perfectly synced to take advantage of the hype and marketing push.
Madonna is a little late to the fragrance game. Other singers like Jennifer Lopez and even Selena Gomez have launched their own scents. Madonna worked with perfume maker Stephen Nilsen to come up her brand, which will be distributed by Coty, Inc.
Madonna attributes her mother, who died of breast cancer for providing the inspiration for the perfume. “My oldest memory of my mother is her perfume. I carry it with me everywhere,” she said in a statement. “She always smelled like Gardenias and Tuberose–an intoxicating mixture, feminine and mysterious.”
The 53-year-old singer said she also added her own touch of “narcotic florals, balanced with smells of wood and vanilla.”
The 30-second spot for the fragrance is vintage Madonna. It shows her gyrating, pressing up against mirrors, clutching her breasts and rolling around seductively on her back, wearing her trademark black lingerie. She sings the ad’s backing track as well.

I know good girls don’t misbehave
But I’m a bad girl.
The video recalls her 1991 “Truth or Dare” documentary and the released of a 1992 coffee table book titled “Sex.” She was photographed nude for the book in collaboration with Fabien Baron, who also worked on her new commercial.
