Chanel Iman Stands Out in Industry With Too Few Minorities (photos) 1Chanel Iman stands out in a fashion industry long criticized for not hiring and promoting women of color. With a name like hers (it’s real) it’s hard to see how she wouldn’t have a career in fashion and it shows in a new spread in Deluxe magazine.

Iman, full-name Chanel Iman Robinson, broke into the industry at 13 with Ford Models in Los Angeles, where she grew up. She’s now repped by IMG Models, VIVA Model Management and D’management Group.

She came in third in Ford’s “Supermodel of the World” contest in 2006 when she was 16 an hasn’t looked back.

She vaulted to public attention the following year with a cover appearance on Teen Vogue, with two other up-and-coming models Karlie Kloss and Ali Michael.

But most of Iman’s success–and work–has come from overseas. The willowy five-foot, 10-inch tall beauty has walked runways for Balenciaga, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney. In 2010, she scored another breakthrough when she became a Victoria’s Secret angel.

She’ll appear in this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on CBS, Tuesday (Dec. 4).

In her latest shoot for the the UK Evening Standard’s fashion magazine, she flaunts sexy, fur-trimmed lingerie for photographer David Romer. Designs are by Roberto Cavalli, Diane von Furstenberg and Mulberry. Nathalie Riddle directed the shoot, while Keith Carpenter styled Chanel’s hair and Walter Obal handled makeup.
