The first installment, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” ended with Bagins (Martin Freeman) on his quest to free the Lonely Mountain from the ferocious dragon.
Only then could the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor reclaim its rightful place. Bagins is traveling with Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Stephen Fry makes an appearance as the Master of Lake-town.
The new trailer opens with the question: “Where does your journey end?” a wistful voice-over intones. “The quest to regain a homeland and slay a dragon.”
Bloom’s character, Legolas, the Elven Prince of Mirkwood and the son of Thranduil, appears suddenly with his bow drawn. “Do not think I won’t kill a dwarf,” he threatens.
The scene cuts to Tauriel, who can be heard in a chilling voice over: “When did we allow evil to become stronger than us?”
A lot of sword-play follows until the dragon finally appears.
“The Desolation of Smaug” has been filmed in regular format, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, and the new 48-frame-per-second 3D. It hits theaters in September.
