Lily Collins: Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence Inspire Me

Lily Collins is making majory inroads in Hollywood as a leading lady.

Lily Collins is just starting to establish her own identity in the swirl of young Hollywood stardom. Although she comes from rock royalty, her father is UK musician Phil Collins, she’s gone through a period of adjustment to handle her newfound fame.

“I used to be a big planner and had to have things figured out ahead of time, but I’m learning to love living in the moment,” she tells Seventeen magazine in its September issue.

“Last night, I called my friend up randomly and said, ‘Where are you? I want to come see you!’ It’s not a new version of me. I’m just embracing it more,” she added.

Collins, 24, moved to Los Angeles with her mother when she was five years old after her father and mother, Jill Tavelman, divorced. Her mom is now president of Beverly Hills Women’s Club.

Beside acting, Collins also has a penchant for writing and studied broadcast journalism at the University of Southern California. She covered the 2008 US Presidential campaign for Nickelodeon on the show “Kids Pick the President.”

Then again, she’s always been pretty focused. “I didn’t feel the pleasure in drinking or doing drugs,” she says of her high school years. “I wanted to remember the fun moments that I had with my friends and not wake up and go, ‘Um, I think I had fun?’”

She appeared in two episodes of “90210,” before her breakout role in the 2009 film “The Blind Side” as Collins Tuohy, the daughter of Sandra Bullock’s character Leigh Anne Tuohy.

She landed her first lead with “Twilight” hunk Taylor Lautner in the 2011 action/adventure movie “Abduction.” The film bombed but she’s been landing lead actress parts ever since. She starred in 2012’s “Mirror Mirror” with Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane.

She’s also landed the role of Clary Fray in the fantasy film adaptation “The Mortal Instruments” series based on the books by Cassandra Clare. Both “City of Bones” and “City of Ashes” are in pre-production.

With a major cinema series looming, she looks to two other actresses who went through the same experience with “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence.

“I admire how they’ve both handled the fame that came with those roles and their ability to step outside those roles and do other projects. That’s what I want to do balance fun big movies with gritty passion projects I love,” she says.

With her career seemingly cemented in Hollywood, Collins feels like she starting to define herself.

“I’ve definitely edged-up my style a little but not for any reason other than I’m experimenting with myself. I always wanted tattoos, so this past November, I got two. I got my back done first its my handwriting and it says, Love always and forever,” she says.

And the same thing goes for her relationship with co-star Jamie Campbell Bower.

“We’ve made a conscious decision to go out and live life. I’m not one to hide anything, but I don’t feel the need to comment directly on it,” she says.

“I think it would be a shame to not live in the moment and not enjoy everything that’s happening in fear of other people’s opinions.”
