The latest installment of the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy “The Hobbit,” directed by Peter Jackson, picks up where the first movie, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” left off.
Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and crew travel with the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield into the Kingdom of Erebor.
They pass through Mirkwood, Esgaroth, and Dale on their way to do battle with Smaug. After overcoming goblins, orcs and wargs, Smaug’s Lonely Mountain redoubt looms.
Orlando’s Legolas plays a pivotal role after a conflict erupts between elf king Thranduil (Lee Pace) and Tauriel, whom he quickly falls for. But he never consummates his love. Both are fierce warriors who are pitted against each other.
At the end of the trailer, Bilbo is shown confronting Smaug in the great treasure room. That’s Benedict Cumberbatch doing the scary voice over for the dragon.
“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” opens in theaters on Dec. 13.
Footnote: Don’t thumb through Tolkien’s books looking references to Tauriel. Lilly was added to the movie by Jackson to provide a female focal point and perspective to the film.
