It’s a new twist on the age-old sci-fi formula of technology gone awry.
Depp is joined by an all-star cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara and Rebecca Hall.
The film also marks the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, the long-time cinematographer for Director Christopher Nolan. Needless to say, the cinematography is fantastic.
The trailer sets up the movie by introducing Depp’s semi-mad scientist Will Caster, who is a leading researcher into artificial intelligence. He’s close to perfecting a machine that can think and reason like a human when he’s shot by a radical anti-technology activist.
Dying slowly because the bullet is laced with a radioactive isotope, Caster decides to have his own brain impulses uploaded into the computer, in effect, becoming the computer.
Hall who plays wife and fellow researcher, Evelyn Caster, and her colleague Max, played by Bettany, oversee the project, which quickly gets out of hand once Will takes over the machine.
His thirst for knowledge morphs into a quest for power and all hell breaks loose as he asserts control.
The film appeared on the 2012 Black List of Hollywood’s most anticipated un-produced screenplays, so Hollywood is betting it has a winner. Of note, a Chinese company, DMG Entertainment, is financing the film. It hits theaters in April 2014.
