New Chappie Trailer Taps Dark Prejudices to Reveal Our Humanity

Chappie must confront deep-seated prejudices because he is a robot with artificial intelligence.

“Chappie” is not a new story; it’s a clever retelling of an old one. Director and writer Neill Blomkamp explored the same themes in his sci-fi film “District 9” and they’re readily apparent in the new “Chappie” trailer– with a twist.

Chappie is a robot imbued with artificial intelligence, the first of his kind.

He exudes an almost child-like innocence, yet brings out the worst instincts of those around him, that is, mostly those over the age of 30.

To say this bucket of bolts is misunderstood would be an understatment.

As a symbol of advanced technology, he’s immediately greeted with suspicion and mistrust. That natural reaction, at least in Blomkamp’s mind, is to destroy it.

Chappie, of course, has immense power, which only heightens the fear. But his biggest problem is he’s different from everyone else. He’s even bullied.

In the trailer, Hugh Jackman is a snarling scientist called Vincent, who believes Chappie is a menace. Anri du Toit, is his counter, an off-beat artist who gets it.

Dev Patel as Deon, Chappie’s creator, is both a father and mother figure.

Like any parent, he shows unconditional love for his creation and tries to encourage Chappie to reach his full potential against a bewildering world marked by prejudice and hate.

Is Chappie ultimately a tragic figure like Frankenstein? Bloomkamp doesn’t tip his hand, for now.
