In the new trailer, Tris is framed against the backdrop of a destroyed and burning Chicago.
Her mom, played by Ashley Judd, is trapped in a burning building that mysteriously begins to float away. But Tris makes a flying leap and snags a cable dangling from the building.
She makes another death-defying leap to a burnt out highrise, grabs her mother’s hand and pulls her to safety. The scene may be merely a dream sequence, but it definitely foreshadows lots of CGI-fueled action.
The sequel picks up with Tris and her companion Four, played by Theo James, on the run from the Erudite faction, led by Kate Winslet’s character Jeanine.
The faction, is one of five: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Citizens are pigeon-holed into one of the groups or their branded “divergent” and considered a threat to society.
Erudite believes it’s the best equipped to run affairs and is trying to ruthlessly take over. But Tris’s family, members of Abnegation, holds a secret that Tris must learn to stop the takeover, according to the movie’s synopsis.
Tris and Four are hunted by the Erudites, who believe they must stop them at all cost.
Along with Woodley, James and Judd, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson and Mekhi Phifer reprise their roles. Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts and Suki Waterhouse debut in the sequel.
The movie is slated for release Mar. 20.
