Carrie Underwood, by far the most successful “American Idol” winner, shows off her acting skills in a new trailer for “Soul Surfer,” a touching, true life story that includes a veteran actors, Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt and AnnaSophia Robb.
The film is based on the life of Bethany Hamilton, a fetching teen and accomplished surfer who loses her entire arm in a shark attack.
It’s a story of faith, determination and renewal as Bethany recovers from the attack and begins to start surfing again.
Hamilton captured the world’s attention and sympathy. The film is heavy on schmaltz, but uplifting nonetheless.
Robb plays the bikini-clad teen, while Quaid and Hunt play her parents. Underwood, in her film debut, plays a church youth group leader, who helps Bethany work through her emotional problems.
The part is hardly a stretch for Underwood, who was raised in a religious family, but the camera loves her.
Underwood stuck her toe into acting last year in a guest spot on “How I Met Your Mother.”
The film won’t approach James Franco’s graphic portrayal of a rock climber who cuts off his own arm in the Oscar-nominated movie “127 Hours.”
But it should be solid family fare. The film debuts in April. Check out the video below.
