Both Winslet’s character and Elba’s, a doctor named Ben Bass, are in a hurry to get to their destinations.
Alex is set to marry her fiancé (Dermot Mulroney), while Bass has surgeries scheduled.
When bad weather grounds their Salt Lake City flight, they decide to charter a plane together. Big mistake.
The plane crashes in the High Uintas Wilderness, a mountainous area in northeastern Utah. Alex is injured and Ben is filled with doubts about their survival.
“You’ve really hurt your leg – your phone is smashed, my phone has no signal and we’re pretty high up on the mountain,” says Bass, assessing the situation.
“If we stay here, we’re safe; [but] search and rescue… they’re less likely to find us,” he adds.
With that, the plot is set in motion.
“‘I don’t want to die up here because you don’t want to take a risk,” says the headstrong Alex.
After a failed attempt to signal and overhead aircraft, Alex sums up the dire nature of their situation.
“Nobody knows where we are, we’re all we’ve got, me and you,” she says.
They decide to set out on their own to find their way down the mountain to safety. But the journey is perilous and a unique bond forms between them.
Hany Abu-Assad directs the film, based on a novel with the same name by Charles Martin.
“The Mountains Between Us” opens Oct. 20. Check out the trailer below.
