Emily Browning, a model and rising actress from Australia, makes a serial leap from her last film, “Sucker Punch,” into an erotic drama about a bizarre prostitution ring. The film is aptly titled “Sleeping Beauty.”
Browning, who does several nude scenes in the new film, is best known for playing Violet Baudelaire in the 2004 children’s fantasy “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” and as Baby Doll in “Sucker Punch,” which bombed at the box office.
“Sleeping Beauty” is an Australian independent film by first-time director Julia Leigh who wrote the book on which it’s based.
Browning, 22, who won the 2005 AFI International Award for Best Actress for her role in Lemony Snicket plays Lucy, a young university student who is drawn into prostitution.
The ring specializes in bizarre fetishes, and Lucy’s specialty is taking drugs, so men can play out their fantasies on her while she is unconscious.
She is unable to remember what happened the next day.
The script made the 2008 Black List of unproduced screenplays in Hollywood and was filmed for $10 million.
It also stars Michael Dorman, Rachael Blake as Clara, Tammy McIntosh, Mirrah Foulkes as Sophie, Henry Nixon as Mark and Chris Haywood.
Browning took the role following Mia Wasikowska bowed out of the film.
