Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape and James Franco, the scientist who accidentally gives him intelligence, are featured in the latest trailer for the reboot of the 1960s cult classic “Planet of the Apes.”
“Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” will also star James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow and Brian Cox.
The film, a prequel, focuses on how apes evolved into intelligent beings who take over Earth following a war that reduces the human population to savages.
The new trailer is longer and focuses more on the human characters whose experimentation leads to an advanced society of apes.
Franco plays a scientist who is testing potential Alzheimer’s cures on ape, Caesar.
One of the serums triggers changes in Caesar’s brain, causing him to become intelligent and lead a rebellion.
WETA Digital in Wellington, New Zealand, is applying the special effects technology, which were featured in the first trailer.
It won an Academy Award for creating the fantasy world and characters in James Cameron’s groundbreaking movie “Avatar.”
Filmmakers are using motion-capture technology to track the motion of the actors wearing special suits with markers.
Then, using computers, the ape features are superimposed on the characters, resulting in a blend of each.
The original film starred Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly and Linda Harrison.
It was released by 20th Century Fox and only cost $5.8 million to make. The sets were primitive and ape society was limited to late 19th century technology.
It grossed more than $32.5 million and spawned four sequels, a television show and a remake in 2001 directed by Tim Burton.
The film hits theaters in August. Check out the trailer below.
