Brad Pitt Swings for Fences in Money Ball Trailer (watch!) 1Brad Pitt is swinging for the fences in a new trailer for “Moneyball,” a sports movie about the rise of the hapless 2002 Oakland Athletics to a competitive team.

Sports movies are always tricky fare at the box office. They either strike out or hit a long ball for extra bases.

Pitt is working with a compelling story about Billy Beane, a general manager of the A’s, who challenges professional baseball’s conventional wisdom.

He has a strong supporting cast. Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plays manager Art Howe, and Jonah Hill, plays Ivy League grad Peter Brand, a composite character.

Brand comes up with some unorthodox ideas about how to find winning baseball players on the cheap, and he and Beane apply their ideas to the Athletics, one of baseball’s cash-strapped teams.

The new trailer, which rehashes some scenes from the first promo clip, opens with Pitt in a meeting explaining the team’s predicament. “There are rich teams,” he says, “and there are poor teams.”

“Then, there’s 50 feet of crap, and then, there’s us.”

The movie is really about behind the scenes machinations as Beane and Brand reconstruct the team, which solves the problem of trying to recreate a lot of on-the-field action, always hard to do convincingly.

Look for Hoffman to finally growl a line in the clip.

Pitt also has a heavyweight director Bennet Miller and Oscar-winning writers, Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillians on his team.

Plus, they are working off a best-selling novel “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” by Michael M. Lewis, which has a built-in fan base.

Check out the new clip below. The movie opens Sept. 23 just as baseball gears up for the playoffs.
