John Cusack Haunting as Edgar Allan Poe (New Trailer!)

John Cusack Haunting as Edgar Allan Poe (New Trailer!) 1John Cusack looks convincing as Edgar Allen Poe, the famed 19th Century author, in a new trailer for “The Raven,” a haunting murder mystery revolving around Poe’s macabre short stories.

It seems someone, maybe even Poe himself is responsible for murders that mirror Poe’s classics, such as
“The Pit and the Pendulum.” “The Cask of the Amontillado” and “The Masque of the Red Death.”

Directed by James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta”), the film also stars Alice Eve (“Sex and the City 2″) as Poe’s fiance, Brendan Gleeson (“In Bruges”) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“Faster”).

Poe died at 40, in Baltimore on Oct. 7, 1849, after being found delirious, lying in a doorway on a city street. He was wearing someone else’s clothes.

His death, never fully explained, has been attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis and other causes.

The trailer was released on the 162nd anniversary of his passing.

McTeigue and co-star Luke Evans, who plays a detective, laid a wreath at Poe’s grave yesterday (Oct. 7) at Baltimore’s Westminster Hall.

The movie is set in the last week of Poe’s life. Detective Emmett Fields (Evans) is forced to enlist Poe’s help when a series of murders appear to be inspired by the author’s short stories.

The killer toys with Poe’s “detective mind,” inviting him to try to solve the case.

The killer even buries Emily alive, creating a race against time catch the killer and save his beloved’s life.

“He was a bit of a rock star in his day,” says Cusack of his character.

“He was world famous and he had a huge ego. He loved the women he loved and he was very charismatic. And he was funny! Some of his stories, like ‘Hop-Frog’ have a sardonic, sick sense of humor.”

The film will be released on March 9, 2012.
