Do'h! Channing Tatum Movies Debut on Same Day (trailers!)

Channing Tatum is about to get a whole lot of time on the big screen. He has two films coming out on the same day domestically. Both stripper boy film “Magic Mike” and “GI Joe” sequel will debut in June. Bets on how they’ll fare?

The Steven Soderbergh-directed “Magic Mike,” starring Tatum, Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey bears the most watching. It’s about a male strip club.

While the premise sounds intriguing, and some may argue it’s about time, films about female strippers routinely flop. Paul Verhoeven’s 1999 stinker “Show Girls,” with Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan and Gina Gershon, was so bad it ruined Berkley’s career.

Then Demi Moore gave it a shot in the 1996 sex comedy “Striptease,” directed, produced, and written by Andrew Bergman, with Burt Reynolds and Ving Rhames. Even Moore’s torrid dance scenes couldn’t save the movie.

More recently, Christina Aguilera tried with 2010 musical”Burlesque.” Oscar winner and co-star Cher and Aguilera’s sexy cabaret acts failed to arouse audiences. The film earned $90 million worldwide against a cost of about $50 million.

In “Magic Mike,” Tatum plays veteran stripper Magic Mike. He wants to escape is stripper reputation while teaching a newcomer (Pettyfer), known as “The Kid” all of the tricks of the trade. In the process he falls for the kid’s sister, who offers the promise of a normal life.

They work at the club Xquisite, owned by the former stripper Dallas (McConaughey). Lots of beefcake drives the movie, which may appeal to single females. The trailer was released earlier this week.

Sequel “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” will feature most of the cast from the first film, including Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis. Tatum co-stars with Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce and Lee Byung-hun.

The first G.I. Joe film in 2009 earned $302.5 million worldwide, about half of which came from the United States. The G.I. Joe Team goes after Zartan, Storm Shadow and Firefly, who have been assembled by the freed Cobra Commander.
