Quentin Tarantino Camps Up Django Unchained in New Trailer (watch!) 1Quentin Tarantino has created all the pieces for an action-packed send up of spaghetti westerns and puts them on display in a new trailer for “Django Unchained.” But whether he can turn them into a coherent film remains to be seen.

His new movie is ambitious just like his previous pictures. He takes a serious subject, slavery in pre-Civil War United States, and camps it up with plenty of gunplay, explosions, splattering blood and outsized characters.

In many ways, he follows the same formula as his previous film “Inglourious Basterds.” He takes an historically significant event and plays off stereotypes to create a movie that takes on comic book proportions.

The movie’s basic plot revolves around Jamie Foxx, who plays ex-slave Django. He’s determined to find his wife, a slave who was sold b the Brittle brothers to plantation owner Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Django hooks up with a bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz, who is in search of the notorious brothers. Only Django has seen the outlaws and he agrees to help, if the bounty hunter helps him rescue his wife.

Tarantino quickly dispels any intention of treating the subject seriously. The trailer shows snippets of campy one-liners and sight gags, including Jonah Hill as a Klu Klux Klansman. Forget the fact that the Klan wasn’t formed until after the war, Tarantino never lets details stand in the way of artifice.

There’s also a shot of Samuel L. Jackson, whose character looks surprisingly like Uncle Ben from the rice box.

The movie hits theaters on Christmas Day. Check out the trailer below and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for more film updates.
