Éponine is jealous and hateful toward Cosette and moves Valjean to pity Cosette, which sets in motion his plans to take her away from the Thérnadiers.
Cosette, played by Amanda Seyfried, is the daughter of Fantine, who works for Valjean. He’s secretly gone to the Thérnadiers tavern to return Cosette to her mother. The next morning on Christmas Day, Valjean informs the Thénardiers that he wants to take Cosette.

Mme. Thénardier, played by Helena Bonham Carter, is all to happy to be rid of her, but the scheming husband, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, sees an opportunity to make some money.
Valjean offers up 1,500 francs and he and Cosette leave. However, Thénardier thinks there is more money to be had, and tells Valjean he can’t let Cossette go without permission from her mother. That allows Valjean to spring his little trap. He produces a letter from Fantine.
From there, Valjean and Cosette flee to Paris. Éponine and Cosette become rivals again years later in Paris, where the Thérnadiers live in poverty after losing their inn. Both fall in love with Marius, the young radical played by Eddie Redmayne.
In the song “On My Own,” Éponine is expressing her frustration and longing because Marius, whom she loves, prefers Cosette, and is using her to help find his true love. She also imagines her life with him.
Barks, 22, who is English, is a professional singer and actress. The role is a major big-screen breakthrough for her. She’s mostly worked in theater. Check out her performance below.
