Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor had trouble finding a distributor for gay farce “I Love You Phillip Morris,” so miraculously a hot gay clip from the film has been released — Is America ready for this?
The film was a critical success at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and has found audiences in wide distribution in Europe and elsewhere, but as far as Hollywood is concerned, the United States may not be ready for such a movie.
It has struggled to find a U.S. distributor for more than a year. But the film was re-edited and sex scenes were toned down, and Variety reported that Consolidated Pictures Group had acquired the rights for distribution.
But its initial July 30 release date was postponed, and now the film is scheduled to debut in October. So far, it’s grossed $14.5 million overseas, a respectable showing.
Carrey is said to be at his comedic best in the film.
The comedy-drama is based on the life of con artist, impostor, and multiple prison escapee Steven Jay Russell (Carrey), who falls in love with his cell mate Phillip Morris (McGregor) will doing time in prison.
After Morris is released, Russell escapes four times to be reunited with him. The film was adapted from “I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks” by Steve McVicker.
Russell did his best to play it straight. Through flash backs the film shows him in Texas as a happily married police officer who plays the organ at church and has sex every night with his wife.
After a life changing car crash, he realizes he’s gay and heads for Miami to pursue a hedonistic gay lifestyle. He gets into trouble when he starts living beyond his means.
